NEW MEMBERS OF THE ALAMEDA COUNTY JUVENILE JUSTICE/DELINQUENCY PREVENTION COMMISSION TAKE OFFICE
Seven new members of the Alameda County Juvenile Justice/Delinquency Prevention Commission took the Oath of Office today, in Department 150 of the Superior Court of California, County of Alameda. After brief remarks from William A. McKinstry, Presiding Judge, Superior Court and Keith Carson, member of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, Brenda Harbin-Forte, Presiding Judge, Juvenile Court, administered the Oath of Office to the new members. While friends, families, existing members of the Juvenile Justice/Delinquency Prevention Commission and government officials looked on, the following individuals repeated the Oath of Office to become members of the Juvenile Justice/Delinquency Prevention Commission:
Barbara E. M. Cannon, Ed.D., Alameda, term expires on March 10, 2003
Kirstin Conti, Oakland, term expires on October 10, 2001
Walter Riley, Esq., Oakland, term expires on March 10, 2003
Ashwin Seshagiri, Castro Valley, term expires on September 10, 2001
Marion F. Sims, Oakland, term expires on July 31, 2004
Marvin R. Smith, Oakland, term expires on July 31, 2004, and
Dezie Woods-Jones, Oakland, term expires on July 31, 2004.
These seven individuals join existing Juvenile Justice/Delinquency Prevention Commission members:
Grace Driver, Piedmont, term expires on February 30, 2003
Carl Mack, Sr., Berkeley, term expires on February 30, 2003
Carlos McLean, Oakland, term expires on February 30, 2003 and
Ben Tapscott, Oakland, term expires on April 31, 2003
Also in attendance at the ceremony were Winifred Smith from the Office of the Attorney General, State of California and Sylvia J. Johnson, Chief Probation Officer. After the ceremony, commission members attended a monthly meeting of the Juvenile Justice/Delinquency Prevention Commission.
The duties of the Juvenile Justice/Delinquency Prevention Commission are identified in various sections of the Welfare and Institutions Code and the Alameda County Charter. Briefly, they provide that the Juvenile Justice/Delinquency Prevention Commission will:
- inspect, report and make recommendations concerning publicly administered institutions housing juveniles;
- coordinate, on a countywide basis, the work of those governments and non-governmental organizations engaged in activities designed to prevent juvenile delinquency;
- nominate individuals to the Superior Court and the Board of Supervisors as candidates for any vacancy in the position of Alameda County Chief Probation Officer.
Appointments to the Juvenile Justice/Delinquency Prevention Commission are made by the Presiding Judge, Superior Court of California, County of Alameda, upon recommendation of the Presiding Judge, Juvenile Court. The Superior Court conducts an extensive community outreach effort to elicit commission candidates from throughout Alameda County.
