Biographical Information
Alameda County Juvenile Justice/Delinquency Prevention Commission Members Taking Oath of Office
The Superior Court of California, County of Alameda issues this supplemental information concerning new Juvenile Justice/Delinquency Prevention Commission Members.
Judge Brenda Harbin-Forte, the Presiding Judge of Juvenile Court said: "I welcome these new Juvenile Justice/Delinquency Prevention Commission members and look forward to working with them. Their collective commitment to placing a priority on the needs of youth will serve them well as they join the existing commissioners and chart their future course. I am confident that this new commission will become a model for others to emulate."
Barbara E.M. Cannon, Ed.D., an Alameda resident, brings to the Commission a broad knowledge of the public education system. Dr. Cannon taught for 16 years at the junior high level in the Berkeley Public Schools and is a retired Dean of the Math & Science Division for Merritt College.
Kirstin Conti, an Oakland resident, is 15 years old and in the fall will enter her sophomore year of high school. She is one of two youth members.
Walter Riley, Esq., is an attorney and an Oakland resident. He is the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Vanguard Public Foundation and Chair of the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts.
Ashwin Seshagiri, a Castro Valley resident, is 17 years old and in the fall will enter his senior year of high school. He is the other youth member.
Marion F. Sims, an Oakland resident, has extensive experience in the area of youth programs. Beginning in 1956, he held various positions with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Oakland, retiring in 1994 as Director of Development for that organization. He is a member of the Beat 34 Neighborhood Crime Prevention Council.
Marvin R. Smith, an Oakland resident, is a former Richmond police officer and a former military policeman for the U.S Army. He is currently employed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He is a present or past member of a number of organizations including the Board of Directors of the Youth Orchestra of Southern Alameda County, the Oakland School District Facilities Master Plan Task Force and the Alameda County Grand Jury, where he served as foreman during his final term (1989-1990).
Dezie Woods-Jones, an Oakland resident, is currently employed by the Peralta Community College District as the Assistant to the Chancellor for External Affairs. She is a former member of the Oakland City Council and she served as Vice-Mayor of Oakland from January 9, 1996 through January 7, 1997. She served as a member on the Alameda County Grand Jury form 1975 to 1977 and as Chairperson of the Oakland Community Policing Advisory Board from 1997 to 1999.
